Joy G. Dryfoos, a founder of the Coalition for Community Schools and an author on teenage health issues, died March 18. She was 86.

Ms. Dryfoos wrote several books and more than 100 articles on adolescent development and the need for school-based social services for students. Her book Full-Service Schools: A Revolution in Health and Social Services for Children, Youth, and Families, published in 1998 by Jossey-Bass, has been an influential text for proponents of the “community school” philosophy, which sees schools as a hub for social supports and other community programs that serve students and families.

“Joy Dryfoos was there at the creation of the current community school movement,” Ira Harkavy, the chairman of the Washington-based coalition, wrote in a statement. “More than that, she, more than anyone else, created it through her writings, words, and actions.”
