By the time students get to middle and high school, it’s assumed they can read fluently. But that’s not always true.
Reading problems are widespread among adolescent learners, and they can have devastating effects on students’ ability to succeed in school. In a recent EdWeek Research Center survey, a majority of educators said that at least a quarter of middle and high schoolers in their districts struggled with basic reading skills.
But unlike elementary schools, secondary schools usually aren’t set up to support students with gaps in foundational skills. There’s often little or no time in the schedule for intervention; teachers don’t have the necessary training; and age-appropriate materials are hard to come by.
This webinar will outline research-backed strategies for supporting older struggling readers and ways in which schools and districts are tackling the persistent challenges preventing these students from receiving the instruction they need.
