Young adults who take antidepressants are at a higher risk for suicidal behavior than older age groups, according to an analysis by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Although race and gender did not play a significant role, the youngest age group in the review—18 to 24—exhibited twice as much suicidal behavior as older age groups. The federal review is a follow-up to findings from 2004 that observed increased suicidal behavior in young adults taking antidepressants. The analysis considered 11 commonly prescribed drugs, 372 trials, and almost 100,000 patients.
