More than 40 percent of the nation’s teachers say they plan to leave the field within five years, according to a survey.
The National Center for Education Information attributes many of the expected departures to retirements in a rapidly aging workforce. The Washington-based private research group’s survey of 1,028 randomly selected teachers, released Aug. 18, found that 42 percent of teachers are age 50 or older, compared with 24 percent in 1996.
