Stefan Pryor, who was introduced last week as Connecticut’s next commissioner of education, is the latest state schools chief to come from a charter school management background.
Mr. Pryor, Gov. Dannel Malloy’s choice for the role, will leave his job as the deputy mayor for economic development for the city of Newark, N.J. He previously worked as a policy adviser to the mayor of New Haven, Conn., and co-founded the charter school Amistad Academy in that city.
A number of former charter school officials have moved into top positions in education departments, including New York Education Commissioner John King, who led the charter network Uncommon Schools.
