“Are L.A.’s Children Ready for School?,” is available online from RAND Corporation. (Requires Adobe’s Acrobat Reader.)

The key predictors of whether a child will be ready for kindergarten are the educational level of his or her mother and the degree of poverty in the child’s neighborhood, a study of 3,000 families in Los Angeles County has found.

Conducted by the RAND Corp., a Santa Monica, Calif.-based research organization, the study notes that even when other home factors are taken into account, 4- and 5-year-old children of well-educated women generally do better on reading and math tests than youngsters with less educated mothers.
