The schools chief in North Carolina’s largest city says he expects to have to lay off more than 1,000 of the district’s 19,000 employees for the coming school year.

Multiple news media outlets reported that Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools Superintendent Peter Gorman said last week that he expects to cut the jobs of 1,030 workers for the 2010-11 fiscal year. He also said there appears to be a $78 million gap between what the school district needs and what it anticipates from the county and the state.

Mr. Gorman said he expects the layoffs to include 600 teachers, 250 other employees, and 164 teacher assistants.
