The House last week approved legislation that would require firms with more than 50 employees to grant workers up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave a year to care for newborn or newly adopted children or ill family members. The measure was sent to President Bush. The vote was 241 to 161, not a large enough margin to override an expected veto.

Final Rules
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has amended its standards for school buses, changing the required alignment of signal arms and changing the rate at which lights on the signal arm must flash. The new rules, published in the Sept. 2 Federal Register, take effect immediately. Petitions for reconsideration must be received by Oct. 2.
