Ten adult-basic-skills programs nationwide have been selected by the Education Department as the first recipients of its “Secretary’s Awards for Outstanding Adult Basic Education Programs,” initiated this year.

Programs honored represent each of the department’s 10 regions and were selected from state nominations after an extensive review process, officials said in announcing the winners last month. Each will receive an engraved plaque this fall during site visits from department officials.

The winners include:

Region I: Nashua Adult Learning Center, New Hampshire; Region II: Fair Lawn Community School (The Fair Lawn Adult Basic Education Program for the Deaf), New Jersey; Region III: Fairfax County Public Schools (Fairfax Adult Integrated Network, fain), Virginia; Region IV: Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute, Hudson, North Carolina; Region V: Springfield School District #186 (Lawrence Adult Center), Illinois; Region VI: New Mexico State University (Dona Ana Branch Community College, Las Cruces) New Mexico; Region VII: Alliance City School, Nebraska; Region VIII: Billings Public Schools, Montana; Region IX: Rio Salado Community College, Phoenix, Arizona; Region X: Islands Community College, Sitka, Alaska.
