For Ashlie Crosson, the 2025 National Teacher of the Year, being a good teacher means keeping her students at the heart of every decision she makes and every reflection she has about her teaching. If those are the foundation, she says, then lesson planning and meeting standards follow naturally.

Here, she explains what that looks like in practice, and how she applies it through a course she created at her school called Survival Stories.
