The clock is ticking in the Clark County, Nev., district as officials scramble to hire 650 teachers before school starts next week.
District officials lay the blame for the shortage on the state education department. They argue that the department did not grant temporary licenses for teachers who already have degrees or experience but have not yet met other state requirements, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
The state granted the temporary licenses to the district, which includes Las Vegas, last year, but the Commission on Professional Standards in Education has balked at doing so this year.
