Spending on education programs at the National Science Foundation would increase by $72 million in fiscal 2008 under a bill approved June 11 by the Commerce, Justice, and Science Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee.
That would bring the agency’s education budget to $822.6 million, nearly 10 percent more than what President Bush requested. The agency received $796 million for education and human-resources programs in fiscal 2007.
The NSF finances programs aimed at improving mathematics and science education, including the agency’s Math and Science Partnership program, which forms ties between schools and colleges for math and science research.
