A study released this month by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the National Center for Transgender Equality found that transgender students and others who don’t fit traditional gender roles face high rates of harassment, discrimination, and physical assault in school settings.
Of more than 6,500 transgender and gender nonconforming participants in the nationwide survey, nearly one-sixth said they had left their K-12 or postsecondary schools due to harassment. Those who reported having been harassed or abused by teachers in K-12 demonstrated worse health and other outcomes than those without such experiences.
