The 37,000-student Mesquite Independent School District, in the Dallas metro area, has won the 2011 Award for Urban School Board Excellence from the Council of Urban Boards of Education. Mesquite was honored for its work in improving student test scores in all subject areas, including an increase from 67 percent in 2004 to 84 percent in 2010 of students in the district who tested “proficient” in math on state standardized tests.
