A Nashville judge has reduced the sentence of a former parent-teacher association president convicted of stealing $150,000 from the group.
Judge Mark Fishburn last week reduced Julie Buchanan’s 15-year sentence to 13 years of intensive probation. The Nashville prosecutor’s office says Ms. Buchanan had served 2½ years of her original sentence for theft, money laundering, and forgery.
Some of the money stolen in the embezzlement was from a fund set up to help pay expenses for a 4th grader who later died of cancer. The new sentence requires Ms. Buchanan to spend 32 hours a month doing community service for the homeless and at the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital cancer center. Her husband has paid $148,000 in restitution to the schools.
