A group of Colorado parents and teachers that has been seeking to oust three Republican school board members who sought to change how AP U.S. History was taught in Jefferson County schools has collected enough valid signatures to force a recall election against them.
The board members were elected by overwhelming margins in 2013 on a ticket that promised to curb spending and expand school choice.
Since then, their critics charge, they have engaged in actions to push a conservative political agenda, including their efforts to create a committee to review the Advanced Placement U.S. History curriculum with a view to removing items they deemed objectionable. The course framework released in 2014 was met with pushback for allegedly being left leaning and not focusing enough on “American exceptionalism.”
