Charter School Network in Chicago Averts Strike
Teachers at one of Chicago's largest charter school networks last week reached a deal to avoid a strike.
Union officials noted that the language of the two-year contract is not final, but the United Educators of UCSN and the UNO Charter School Network reached an accord over such issues as pension contributions, the length of the workday for high school teachers, and class size.
The threatened strike had promised to upend the academic year for about 8,000 students. The charter's union had said their walkout would have been the nation's first for privately operated charter schools. The action comes just as the much larger Chicago Teachers Union begins the process of ratifying a separate tentative deal with the city.
