N.J. Districts Urged To Share Services To Save Money

New Jersey’s 600 school districts should share more services to save money. But they’ll need more encouragement from the state, according to a report by the state school boards’ association.

A committee of the New Jersey School Boards Association spent more than a year looking at shared-services arrangements in New Jersey and other states. Sharing services, such as special education, food services, snow and garbage removal, and transportation, could help save money, the report concludes. Many districts have resisted calls to merge outright.

The report calls for state legislation to encourage more sharing of services.
