St. Louis System Removes Paint With Lead From Elementary Schools

The St. Louis school district has resolved some lead-paint problems at 25 elementary schools, but not all the work had been done as classes began last week.

Public schools spokesman Patrick Wallace said about $420,000 has been spent to perform lead-paint abatement in schoolrooms for children 6 and under. Young children are the most at risk for possible health problems from ingesting chips or dust from lead-based paint.

The project also called for replacing windows, and the bids for that work were higher than expected. Mr. Wallace said if the school board approves a new bid next month, new windows could be safely installed during the school year whenever children are not present.
