Twenty public schools and school districts were among the 338 winners of a U.S. Energy Department award for innovative energy-conservation programs.
Undersecretary of Energy W. Patrick Collins chose the recipients of the first National Awards Program for Energy Innovation from more than 4,000 entries from 47 states. Energy Secretary Donald P. Hodel made the presentations on Oct. 1.
Other recipients of the department citations included businesses, municipalities, colleges and universities, and individuals.
School projects ranged from educational programs in energy conservation to computerized shut-off and turn-on systems to innovative uses of windows.
The school and district winners were: Weld County School District 6, Greeley, Colo.; St. Vrain Valley Public Schools, Longmont, Colo.; Salmon (Idaho) Junior High School, District 291; Oak Park and River Forest (Ill.) High School; Jefferson County (Ky.) Public Schools; Rowan County (Ky.) School System; Minuteman Regional Vocational-Technical School, Lexington, Mass.; Clarissa (Minn.) Public School; Norris (Neb.) Middle School; Sunland Park Elementary School Project, Albuquerque, N.M.; Portland (Ore.) Public Schools; Tyrone (Pa.) Area School District; Chester (S.D.) Area School District; Lake Area Vocational-Technical Institute, Watertown, S.D.; St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, S.D.; Elizabethton (Tenn.) City Schools; Sullivan County Department of Education in Blountville, Tenn.; Sudbury Elementary School in Vergennes, Vt.; Battleground (Wash.) School District 119; and the Independence (Wis.) School District.
