The International Council of Computer Education predicts that computers will be the dominant mode of instruction in the nation’s schools within the next 30 years.
- Alabama’s governor signs an out-of-court settlement releasing $75 million in bond money that will allow the state’s 128 school districts to remove asbestos from school facilities.
- An outbreak of measles hits the Dade County school system, with cases reported at 29 of 94 schools in the south Florida district. At least 122 cases have been reported.

- The Los Angeles school board appeals a court order temporarily blocking the district from cutting teachers’ pay, which had raised the possibility of bankruptcy for the nation’s second-largest district.
- The New Jersey state board of education approves a plan designed to drive up student performance by setting standards in major subjects and measuring the results in 4th, 8th, and 12th grades.
- A federal survey reveals that parents of 8th graders attending private schools are more likely than parents of public school students to talk to administrators about academic matters, to get involved in parent-teacher groups, and to volunteer at school. (Story ran Nov. 25, 1992.)
