The Mississippi Board of Education has chosen Tom Burnham as the state’s new superintendent of education.

Mr. Burhnam, 46, has been superintendent of the Biloxi, Miss., schools for the past four years.

He succeeds Richard Thompson in the $90,000-a-year post. Mr. Thompson resigned in April to head a state teacher-training center in North Carolina.

Mr. Burnham will assume his new duties July 1.
