To the Editor:
I very much enjoyed Judith L. Pace’s Commentary “Why We Need to Save (and Strengthen) Social Studies” (Dec. 19, 2007). During most of my 30 years with the Philadelphia school district, I was constantly reminded that every lesson should be a reading lesson. Thus, when I taught social studies, I also taught reading. Subjects such as social studies, science, and math are also reading lessons. Not only are they needed for their own content, but they also show students just why they need to be able to read well.
