To the Editor:
A few months back, I was listening to an NPR show on the teaching of evolution. A member of Congress offered as one argument for including creationism in the curriculum the tired old candard that “evolution is only a theory.”
If somehow the message could get out—and out and out—that a scientific theory and a “hunch” are two very different critters, it might take some of the steam out of the creationist engine.
Otherwise, we might also begin excising other “theories” from school curricula, including relativity, the germ theory of disease, probability, differential equations, general relativity, and the wave theory of sound.
