The New York board of regents has adopted new mathematics standards for pre-K-8 students, and granted the committee that is working on the standards an extension to continue work on revising the state’s high school math standards.

By a unanimous vote Jan. 11, the regents adopted changes that will narrow the curriculum in the primary grades so that students can master the core content and skills.

The regents convened the committee two years ago after large numbers of students failed New York’s high school exit exam. (“N.Y. State Seniors Flunk Exit Exam, But Get Diplomas,” July 9, 2003.)

The state board granted the panel an extension to continue working on the math standards for high school students, and expects to consider them at the board’s February meeting.
