Gov. Sonny Perdue of Georgia is pushing a new bill in the state legislature that would provide state funds to allow public, private, and home-schooled students to take classes over the Internet.

The bill, which is a component of the Republican governor’s education agenda, was approved 55-0 by the Senate on Jan. 27 and now goes to the House.

Mr. Perdue hopes the initiative would increase students’ access to Advanced Placement classes and other advanced mathematics and science courses.

If enacted, the plan would establish the Georgia Virtual School. It would be directed by the state education department, which would begin offering more than 60 online high school courses this summer.
