Homeschooling: Parents as Educators, a book describing characteristics of home schooling parents in three Western states, by Maralee Mayberry, J. Gary Knowles, Brian Ray, and Stacey Marlow. Corwin Press, 1995.
Home Schooling: Political, Historical, and Pedagogical Perspectives, a book edited by Jane Van Galen and Mary Jane Pitman. Ablex Publishing Corp., 1991.
Strengths of Their Own: Home Schoolers Across America, a book version of a study carried out by Brian D. Ray, the president of the National Home Education Research Institute. Copies are available for $12.95, plus shipping, from NHERI, which also publishes the quarterly journal Home School Researcher. Ordering information is available by calling (503) 364-1490.
“Scholastic Achievement and Demographic Characteristics of Home School Students in 1998,” a study by Lawrence M. Rudner, the director of the ERIC Clearinghouse on Assessment and Evaluation, published in the online journal Education Policy Analysis Archives, and can be found at:

“Homeschoolers: Estimating Numbers and Growth,” a U.S. Department of Education paper by Patricia M. Lines describing different approaches toward measuring the size of the home schooling movement. It can be found online at:

Growing Without Schooling, a bimonthly magazine for home schooling parents, published by Holt Associates, which provides other information on home education and alternative schools.
