Dozens of Detroit residents have filed with the city clerk’s office to run for positions on the city’s new school board, which will be elected in November.

More than 70 candidates will run in the Aug. 2 primary for four at-large and seven district seats on the board. It will replace Detroit’s appointed “reform” school board, which was put in place as part of a 1999 state takeover of the 140,000-student district.

After the November election, the members of the new board will search for a new superintendent to run the district. (“Panel to View Detroit Schools as ‘Blank Canvas’,” Jan. 26, 2005.)
