A column of data in the Program Standards table [print edition] on Page 63 of Education Week‘s report Quality Counts 2002: Building Blocks for Success, published as the Jan. 10 issue, provided incorrect information about states that allow exemptions from licensing for nursery schools, preschools, or prekindergarten. The 14 states that do so are: Idaho, Indiana, Maine, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia.

A column of data in the Resources: Adequacy table [print edition] on Page 87 of Quality Counts 2002 provided information about state unadjusted spending for 1999 rather than for 2001, as the chart indicated. The unadjusted spending figures for states for 2001 can be found in the Web version of the report at www.edweek.org/sreports/qc02/.

The report’s state policy update on Texas [print edition] misspelled the name of the state’s acting lieutenant governor, Bill Ratliff.

A story in the Dec. 12, 2001, issue about an international study of reading, math, and science achievement mischaracterized the standing of U.S. 8th graders on the Third International Mathematics and Science Study—Repeat. On the test given in 1999, the American 8th graders’ average score was higher than that of U.S. 4th graders in 1995, but the 8th graders’ standing compared with the international mean was lower than for the 4th graders five years earlier.
