Closing Their Doors

Of the 2,150 charter schools that have opened across the country, 86 had closed as of December 2000. The figures below include schools that were shut down or voluntarily gave up their charters. Another 26 charter schools that were consolidated into their local school districts and an additional 50 schools that received charters but never opened are not counted as closed.

No charter schools have closed in Arkansas, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, or Virginia. In many of those states, charter schools have been operating only for the past couple of years.
