Changes Possible In Reagan Budget, Stockman Suggests

David A. Stockman, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, suggested to members of the House Budget Committee last week that the President’s fiscal 1983 budget--including huge cuts in spending for education--may be negotiable.

The Administration “will look very carefully at a good-faith, sincere effort on the part of the responsible leadership of the Congress ... to propose something different,” the budget director said.

In response to House members’ questions about whether they could reduce the Administration’s tax cuts and defense spending, rather than make the large-scale reductions in spending for social programs that President Reagan has sought, Mr. Stockman urged the Congressmen to come up with “the right mix.”

Mr. Stockman is scheduled to testify before the Senate Budget Committee this week.
