To the Editor:

The Associated Press article “States Weigh Plans to Address Educator Sexual Abuse” in your Feb. 6, 2008, issue focuses on the changes that states are proposing to tighten the oversight and punishment of educators who abuse their students. Since 1987, the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification has operated a clearinghouse designed to prevent educators who have had adverse action taken against their credentials from becoming licensed to teach in another state. All 50 states and the District of Columbia participate in this system, accessible via our Web site (www.nasdtec.org), and it has proven highly effective.
