Yale University is putting millions of dollars a year into a new program that will help send top graduates of schools in New Haven, Conn., to public colleges and universities tuition-free.
To be eligible, students, starting with the class of 2014, would need at least a 3.0 grade point average, a 90 percent attendance rate, a good behavior record, and 40 hours of community service. They would also have an option to receive $2,500 yearly toward tuition at private universities in the state.
The New Haven Promise program is part of the city’s school reform efforts. It is similar to programs in Detroit, Denver, and Pittsburgh.
