A new survey shows a disconnect between teachers’ and students’ beliefs about college readiness.
While just 31 percent of high school teachers think their graduating seniors are prepared for college, 68 percent of current college students say they were ready for college coursework during their first year, according to the annual 2010 Deloitte Education Survey, released last week.
About 28 percent of the students surveyed had to take remedial classes to get up to speed, however. Other sources, such as the College Board, have put the national number as high as 40 percent.
The survey also found that 92 percent of high school teachers feel they don’t have the data they need to fully understand students college needs. The online survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, involved 300 college students and 300 high school educators.
