To the Editor:

The opinion essay “School Counselors Need Better Training on College Admissions” (March 10, 2020) expresses the view that school counselors are not properly equipped to do their jobs. The College Board is committed to supporting the critical work of school counselors as they help students and families achieve college success.

The Counselor Engagement Team at the College Board works with counseling associations nationwide and oversees a robust constellation of services, some of which have been available for decades, designed to aid the professional development of school counselors. Every year, we offer nearly 150 free workshops at colleges and universities across the nation serving thousands of counselors. In addition to our face-to-face offerings, we offer an extensive variety of virtual professional development at no cost, which provides training to thousands of attendees online. The Counselor Engagement Team has also produced volumes of college advising materials and financial aid essentials available online.

We invite counselors and other school administrators to visit us at collegeboard.org/counselors to see the full array of programs available.
