The U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences awarded a $10 million contract last week to the San Francisco-based research group WestEd to lead a new National Center for Cognition and Mathematics Instruction. Its goal will be to use cognitive science to redesign the middle school math curriculum Connected Mathematics Project, which was developed under a National Science Foundation grant in the 1990s. Apple Computer Inc., Pearson, and several universities are also involved.
