A growing number of states are offering financial rewards for students to graduate early from high school, a new report says.
The report from Jobs for the Future, a Boston-based nonprofit, predicts the appeal of policies to help high school students earn diplomas faster will grow as cash-strapped states try to trim K-12 education costs.
States that already offer scholarships to early-graduating students include Arizona, Idaho, and Utah. South Dakota and Indiana just passed legislation setting up such programs, and similar bills are pending in six other states.
The authors warned policymakers, however, to take care to ensure students who graduate early are still well prepared.
