California to Ensure Language Services for ELLs

California schools have agreed under a federal settlement to ensure language education for 1.4 million students who are designated as English-language learners.

State education officials agreed to new training and monitoring procedures to make sure that language services to ELLs meet requirements of federal law, according to the agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice. The state did not acknowledge any wrongdoing in the settlement.

The Justice Department said last year that California had failed to deal with reports from public schools indicating that more than 20,000 English-learners had not received proper instruction, dating back to the 2007-08 school year.
