Over the protests of district teachers and two board members, Superintendent Carole Smith of Oregon’s Portland school system has gotten a 28 percent raise. She’ll be paid $247,000 a year.
Proponents said Ms. Smith has led the 48,000-student district through a period of constrained state funding and rising graduation rates. And, they said, her pay has been relatively unchanged: $190,000 a year for her first six years, with a $3,000 raise last year.
School board member Ron Buel said Ms. Smith should get the same raise teachers are getting: 2.3 percent. That hike came after a last-minute deal averted a walkout.
