The Indian Land Tenure Foundation awarded the South Dakota Department of Education $40,000 to enhance the state’s teaching of its rich Native American history and culture.
With money from the grant, South Dakota schools will develop a curriculum that spans school subjects—extending beyond history and social studies and into language arts, science, and math—and establish a steering committee to integrate Native American topics into existing state standards.
The committee will include nine members from each of the states’ nine tribes.
