The Los Angeles Unified School District has rescinded about 5,000 layoffs planned for teachers, counselors, bus drivers, cafeteria workers and other district employees.
The school board on Tuesday approved employee contracts for the 2011-12 school year that stipulate employees will take four unpaid furlough days to help close a $408 million budget deficit.
However, about 2,000 employees, including elementary school library aides and counselors, will lose their jobs due to a loss in federal funding and declining enrollment.
Superintendent John Deasy says the district’s finances remain contingent on approval of the state budget for the fiscal year starting July 1. He warns employees could be required to take up to six additional furlough days if the state’s anticipated revenue does not materialize.
