Gov. Sonny Perdue has appointed a member of Georgia’s board of education to become the state’s top education honcho temporarily.
Brad Bryant will take over as state superintendent on July 1, replacing Kathy Cox, who is leaving the elected position to run a new, education nonprofit in Washington. Bryant, who like Perdue and Cox is a Republican, has already said that he will collect signatures in order to secure a spot on the ballot to run for a full, four-year term.
In other Georgia education-related politics, former Democratic governor Roy Barnes, who is running again to become the state’s chief executive, is working hard (so far unsuccessfully) to win endorsements from the states’ teacher associations. Stephen Sawchuck over at Teacher Beat has the interesting back story on this.
