A federal appeals court last week upheld the dismissal of a high school guidance counselor over his self-publication of a purported relationship-advice book for women that contains sexually frank passages and indications that the counselor had a “tendency to objectify” women.
Bryan Craig, a tenured guidance counselor and girls’ basketball coach at Rich Central High School in the Chicago suburb of Olympia Fields, last year self-published a book titled It’s Her Fault, which references his employment as a school counselor throughout. Fired, he sued, citing his right to free speech.
In its decision, the three-judge panel unanimously ruled against the counselor, saying the district’s interests in restricting his speech outweighed his free-speech interests.
