Michelle Saylor, the superintendent in Pennsylvania’s Bellefonte Area School District, has brought robust foreign language learning to her district of 2,700 students. Students from kindergarten on up get a dose of Mandarin or Spanish in a language program that Saylor sees as a powerful lever or getting students to understand what global citizenship really means. “From my perspective, language is that conduit into really understanding another culture,” Saylor says.
