The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs consistently lets safety problems slide in the 185 schools run by the Bureau of Indian Education, according to a study by the Government Accountability Office.
The GAO found that 31 percent of the safety-inspection reports it reviewed had been submitted late. Of those, more than one-third were one to two months late, and 11 percent were tardy by more than three months.
Also, out of the 50 inspection reports the GAO reviewed, 28 were incomplete, unclear, or wrong. For example, some inspectors did not inspect all of a school’s buildings, or incorrectly gave schools a year to fix broken fire alarms when they should be fixed in a day. –S.D.S.
