After 18 months without a second-in-command to help a new superintendent, the Los Angeles Unified School District finally has a seasoned urban schools administrator in place.
Ramon C. Cortines, who had been working as Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s point man on education issues, began his duties last month as the district’s senior deputy superintendent. He will oversee the instructional program for the 708,000-student district and manage day-to-day operations.
David L. Brewer, a retired U.S. Navy admiral with no professional experience in education who became the superintendent in October 2006, had struggled to hire an experienced academic leader to help him run the district.
