Three former South Carolina governors are pushing for high school students to take the test immigrants must pass to become U.S. citizens.
Former Govs. Richard W. Riley, Jim Hodges, and James Edwards launched the South Carolina Civics Education Initiative last week.
As currently envisioned, the proposal would not require South Carolina students to take the test, but would give them incentives to do so.
The project is part of a national effort by the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Joe Foss Institute. Six other states launched similar initiatives last week: Arizona, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Utah. The goal is for every state to pass the proposal by 2017, when the U.S. Constitution turns 230 years old.
