Copies of the book are available for $95 each, plus $4.50 for shipping and handling, from the Foundation Center, 79 Fifth Ave./16th St., New York, N.Y. 10003-3076; (212) 620-4230.

The board ranked highest, according to the total dollar value of grants received by a precollegiate organization between 1990 and 1991, winning 10 grants totaling $7,075,000.

The group receiving the largest number of grants in precollegiate education during that time was Teach for America, a teacher-recruitment organization. It won 27 grants with a total dollar value of $3,454,000.

The figures were reported in “Who Gets Grants/Who Gives Grants: Nonprofit Organizations and the Foundation Grants They Received,’' released by the center in June.

Although the Foundation Center has published “The Foundation Grants Index’'--a listing of foundation grants by subject area--since 1972, this is the first time it has published a directory focused on the nonprofit organizations that are the recipients of grant dollars.

The new, 1,353-page directory lists the top 1,000 grant-winning organizations in the nation, based on the dollar value of grants received. It also breaks down the top-50 grant-winners in 19 subject areas, including precollegiate education, higher education, the arts and culture, civil rights, and the environment.

Other Winners

A number of groups that play an active role in education reform are also listed in the book under the subject area of “Education, other.’'

The number-one grant-winner in this category is the Michigan Partnership for New Education, which received three grants totaling $6,369,062. (See related story, page 1.)

Also on this list are the Academy for Educational Development in New York, which ranked seventh, with seven grants totaling $1,794,000, and the Education Commission of the States, which ranked 13th, with eight grants totaling $1,270,000.

The rankings were compiled from listings of 48,554 grants of $10,000 or more that were awarded by the 300 largest foundations in the country and 537 other private, corporate, and community foundations of varying sizes to 16,934 nonprofit organizations, largely between 1900 and 1991.
