A nationwide poll suggests that 5 percent of America’s high school students identify themselves as homosexual, and that 72 percent of students know someone who is gay or lesbian.
Commissioned by the New York City-based Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network, or GLSEN, the poll also found that of the 2,161 9th through 12th graders surveyed, 11 percent said they knew a gay or lesbian teacher, 30 percent said they have a close friend who is homosexual, and 81 percent reported hearing anti-homosexual comments in their schools frequently.
