Schools in the 21st century should be constructed with more diverse learning environments and should be more integrated with their communities, a report on school design says.
“Report From the National Summit on School Design” is available from the American Architectural Foundation.
The report—produced by the Washington-based American Architectural Foundation and the Cincin-nati-based KnowledgeWorks Foundation—recommends designing schools to support a variety of learn-ing styles, fostering a “small school” culture, and engaging the public in the planning process, among other suggestions.
The recommendations come from an October 2005 meeting of more than 200 educa-tors, architects, civic leaders, nonprofit leaders, and local government officials.
